Research Focus Area
The group’s research focuses on mathematical techniques related to the intersection of operations research and machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning. The group is interested in solving open questions in the field of optimization algorithms for solving machine learning problems, such as those related to the training of deep neural networks, which have revolutionized the ability of computers to perform perceptual tasks such as image classification, speech recognition, machine translation, and many others. The group is also interested in applying learning algorithms for solving operations research problems, such as for supply chain management and solving decision problems in healthcare and energy systems.
This group works on advancing the state of the art of algorithms for solving operations research, machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning problems. They hold seminars weekly and host visitors regularly. Many of these activities are run through the Optimization and Machine Learning (OptML) group. The group recently hosted a workshop on Optimization in Machine Learning with sponsorship by NSF.
Members of the group are co-chairing the Organizating Committee for the 2022 International Conference on Continuous Optimization (ICCOPT) to be held at Lehigh in Summer 2022. This is one of the flagship conferences of the Mathematical Optimization Society (MOS).
